CONFERENCE ANNOUNCE: The international scientific mammoth conferences have been held since 1995. Their initiator was the Russian Mammoth Committee attached to the Zoology Institute RAS. The first conference was held in Saint-Petersburg, the second one – in 1999 in Rotterdam (Netherlands). The third conference took place in 2003 (Dawson, Canada) under the name “Mammoths and their environment” where 45 oral and 30 poster presentations were made by about 100 scientists from the USA, Canada, Russia, Great Britain, France, Netherlands, Germany, Spain, etc.
Thanks to kind invitation of the Government of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the next conference on mammoths will be conducted in Yakutia, known as one of the richest in mammoth findings places in the Earth.
The 4th International Conference will take place in Yakutsk on June 18-22, 2007 with the Mammoth Museum IAEN AS RS (Ya) playing host to. Registration of participants and opening of the Conference are planned on June 18th at the Conference Hall of the Academy of Sciences of Sakha Republic. June 19-20 will be devoted to a ship journey along the Lena River. During the journey, section meetings, working debates are planned as well as visiting the natural monument Lena Pillars and the museum complex “Soto”. On June 21-22, the conference will be continued in Yakutsk City.
The goal of the Conference is to discuss a wide frame of general and special questions of evolution and taxonomy of the Mammuthus genus and other groups of the Elephantidae family as well as mammoth fauna extinction, paleoecology and taphonomy of mammoth find sites, up-to-date achievements in investigation of DNA of mammoths and other mammoth fauna mammals.
CONFERENCE PROGRAM:
June 16-17: Participants arrival and accommodation.
June 18: Conference opening, plenary meetings, Yakutsk site-seeing, banquet.
June 19: River journey starts. Section meetings, visiting Lena Pillars.
June 20: Section meetings, visiting Museum-architectural complex “Soto”. Arrival to Yakutsk.
June 21: Morning – final discussions. Visiting Yakutsk museums including Museum in permafrost.
June 22: Conference closing ceremony.
