Yakutia takes part in Tara Arctic 2007-2008 Research Expedition
On July 11, 2006 Tara Yacht set off for a unique expedition from France to the Arctic Ocean with the purpose of attracting world's attention to the problems and perspectives of the Arctic Zone. The Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) takes an active part in the international scientific project as an official partner.
Tara Arctic 2007-2008 is conducted under the patronage of the UN Environmental Program and President of France Jack Chirac. The scientific research is dedicated to International Polar Years declared for 2007 and 2008.
On August 5, 2006 the three-masted polar centerboarder with reach research experience in the Arctic departed from Murmansk , a Russian port, and continued sailing by the Arctic seaway. On August 17, the yacht arrived in the port of Tiksi (the northern port in Yakutia) to replenish food, water and gasoline supplies. On August 31, it left the port for research location.
The crew has a Yakutian woman Larisa Semenova as well. She is responsible for aerial navigation. Besides, she brought another expedition member – local husky Zagrya.
The expedition will last two years in the Arctic Ocean in latitude 82 North. The yacht is supposed to overcome about 1800 kilometers with drift-ice. The mission is to research climate changes at high latitudes.
“Tara Arctic 2007-2008 is unique in terms of research possibilities. It is going to be the platform for various scientific observations. All important polar and oceanographic laboratories will be untied to monitor, collect and analyze climatic process at high latitudes,” explains project initiator.
The expedition is supposed to complete in 2008. The final destination will be the northern waters of the Atlantic Ocean . In the course of two years, the representative of 45 European and Russian institutions should participate in the research work.
