Verkhoyanye: Another Mammoth. Or Two?
Petr Lazarev, director of the Sakha Mammoth Museum at the North Ecology Institute, and Yury Lukovtsev, representative of the Ministry of Nature Secure and Biological Resources, are going to Verkhoyansk on September, 7.
Vitaly Mironov, chairman of the Verkhoyansk Nature Protection Committee, who had first examined the place of find, told that, on account of long raining, the bank of the Oldzho river cracked and good safe mammoth tusk, 56 kg weight and 20 cm diameter, was found.
The horse-breeders, who had found that tusk, didn't report, they just pulled it out of the bank, sawed it up and brought it to the Cheryumcha village, Verkhoyansky ulus. Then they returned to the bank to look for another tusk. But they didn't find anything. Probably, a mammoth lost his tusk, when he was young. Because the place of his living had become stiff very long time ago.
The examined mammoth is medium in size. Bones, lower jaw-bone, muscular tissues, and wool are in good safe; some spine bones are still united and are held with tendons.
Vitaly heard about the find on the radio on September, 1. The same day he and Yegor Shestakov, the deputy head of Verkhoyansky administration, came to the place that was situated in 150 km from Batagay. The specific smell shows that the mammoth's meat is safe as well.
Besides, pelvic bones were found there. They are dated the same age, but they are smaller in 5 times. So, perhaps, locals found not one, but two mammoths.
