The Northern Forum Flood Workshop
The Northern Forum Flood workshop was held in Yakutsk, the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), Russia, on March 9-12, 2006.
The Northern Forum pays considerable attention to the issues of forecasting and preventing natural disasters, and first of all floods. The Northern Forum Flood workshop is an annual event that brings together government representatives, scientists, environmental organizations, industry, and other sectors to focus on important and timely environmental issues.
II Northern Forum Flood Workshop was held in Yukon province, Canada , February 21-24, 2005. Effective and mutually benefit information exchange was carried out, the various scientific and technical, methodological and organizational questions connected to the flood forecast and a risk assessment in northern regions with application of modern information technologies were discussed.
The agreement on cooperation between Northern Forum and of the Arctic Council working group on Emergency Prevention, Preparedness and Response (EPPR) was signed in spring 2005.
Taking into account the fact that the Republic Sakha (Yakutia) keeps significant positive experience of forecasting, monitoring, prevention and liquidation of consequences of flooding, it was offered to organize the following seminar of the Northern Forum Flood working group in Yakutsk.
The presentation of Polar View project «Interpreted Images from Canadian satellite RADARSAT for definition of river ice status» took place at the workshop.
Discussions on issues of mathematical modelling, monitoring of quality of water and an environment in flood situations were also organized, field works on prevention actions which are carried out in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) on one of the largest rivers of the world - the river Lena will be organized.
The newest technologies of remote measurement of river ice thickness, measures of flood prevention, risk mitigation of ice jams formation were shown. |
