UNESCO Director-General to visit Yakutsk and Ulan Bator

On July 23, 2006 UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura will arrive in Yakutsk from Moscow. The distinguished guest is going to spend two days on the land of Olonkho (the Yakutian heroic epos recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity last year). Visit program appeared to be intensive.

On July 24, 2006 Mr. Koichiro Matsuura plans to meet President of the Sakha Republic Vyacheslav Shtyrov, to familiarize himself with the long-term plan on preservation, revival and development of the Yakutian heroic epos, to participate in the presentation of World Mammoth Museum Project and UNESCO’s Nomadic School Project, to take part in the ceremony of underbuilding the International Center of Olonkho, to lay a bouquet on a memorial to Yakutian writer Platon Oiunsky.

Together with President of the Sakha Republic Vyacheslav Shtyrov, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Yakovenko, and Executive Secretary of the Commission of the Russian Federation for UNESCO Grigoriy Ordjonikidze, Mr. Koichiro Matsuura is going to open International Forum “Sustain Development of Arctic countries and Russian northern regions in the context of education, science and culture”.

UNESCO Director-General schedules a visit to Yakutsk Museum of History and Culture and Sakha Theater where he will see Kyys Djebeliye Olonkho Play.

Next day Mr. Koichiro Matsuura will attend National Art Museum, architectonical museum complex ‘Druzhba’ (‘Friendship’) in the settlement of Sottinzy, and Lena Pillars Nature Park. Special guest is welcome to see Live Traditions of Olonkho Festival.

On July 26, 2006 UNESCO Director-General plan to depart directly for Ulan Bator by chartered flight. On the way to Mongolia he will be accompanied by the cultural delegation of the Sakha Republic led by minister of culture Andrey Borisov. Artists are going to be the main persons in the Days of Yakutia in Ulan Bator on July 26 – 28.

Mr. Koichiro Matsuura's arrival is arranged by special governmental committee consisted of different republic ministries, organizations and institutions and headed by the Vice Preisdent of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) Alexander Akimov. Huge work have done by the Ministry of Foreign Relations of the Sakha Republic and National Committee of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for UNESCO and the Republic Ministry of Education.
