Start of Visit by UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)
Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, on July 24 began his visit to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) of the Russian Federation. Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexander Yakovenko takes part in this trip.
Matsuura was received by the President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Vyacheslav Shtyrov. Their focus of attention was questions relating to the development of cooperation between Russia and UNESCO.
The Director-General was acquainted with the implementation of the republic's Action Plan "Preservation, Revival and Development of the Yakut Epos Olonkho" (2006-2015), which has received the aegis of UNESCO.
Matsuura also took part in the presentation of an international project "Mammoth Museum," and a project "Nomadic Schools," approved by UNESCO in 2006.
On the same day Matsuura and Yakovenko participated and spoke at the plenary meeting of an International Forum on Sustainable Development of the Arctic Countries and Northern Regions of the Russian Federation in the Context of Education, Science and Culture.
On July 25 Matsuura and Yakovenko will visit the Institute of Humanitarian Studies of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and also take part in the events of the festival "Living Traditions of Olonkho."
Russian-UNESCO consultations will take place on a broad range of issues relating to UNESCO activities in Russia and its regions.
