Visit to Yakutia of UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura

Koichiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, visited the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) on July 23-26. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Alexander Yakovenko accompanied the UNESCO Director-General during the trip.
In the course of the visit a meeting with Vyacheslav Shtyrov, President of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), took place, at which high marks were given to the level of cooperation by the Republic with UNESCO.
The UNESCO Director-General took part in the work of the International Forum on Sustainable Development of the Arctic Countries and the Northern Regions of the Russian Federation in the Context of Education, Science and Culture. Taking into account the recommendations worked out by experts, at the end of the forum it was deemed necessary to develop an appropriate international program under the aegis of UNESCO.
Matsuura participated in the first stone laying ceremony of the International Center of the Yakut heroic epic Olonkho, as well as in the events of the Living Traditions of Olonkho Festival.
Shtyrov and Matsuura signed a joint Communique on the Outcomes of the Visit of UNESCO Director-General Koichiro Matsuura to the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) of the Russian Federation defining the main priorities of cooperation that envisage, in particular, the carrying out on Yakutian soil of the UNESCO pilot projects 'Development of Nomadic Community Schools' and 'Development of Bioethics."
Koichiro Matsuura was awarded the highest award of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), The Polar Star.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs highly assesses the outcomes of the visit of the UNESCO Director-General, which has constituted an important stage in the further development of cooperation by Russia with this authoritative international organization in the fields of culture, science and education.
