Childbirth above the Arctic Ocean
Lyudvina Slepzova, of the Tumat village, Ust-Yansky district, gave birth to a boy in the sky above the Arctic Ocean on August 12, 2006. Sergey Gulkov, director of Polar Airlines affiliate in Tiksi, broke that news.
On August 12, 2006 Slepzova who lives in the remote settlement of Tumut, started having labor pains. Pilots of the nearby settlement of Batagai couldn't help her. They were unable to take off due to the absence of flying weather in their settlement.
The Republic Emergency Center recommended transporting her urgently from Tumat to Tiksi. Polar Airlines affiliate decided to send a helicopter MI-8T for the woman in childbirth. The chopper crew with two midwives arrived to Tumat at 4 pm and took Slepzova on board. One hour before landing in Tiksi, the patient began childbirth labor and gave eventually birth to a boy with 3 kilograms 400 grams. At present, newly made mother and her kid feel good. According to Sergey Gulkov, this birth on board is not the first experience. Let's remind of January 22, 2004 when 19-year-old Olga Alexeeva gave birth in flight from Yakutsk to Tiksi. The same story happened on February 16, 2006. At that time a babe was born on the board of Yakutia Airlines plane between Moscow and Yakutsk.
