Below -40ºC on New Year's Holidays!
Weather forecasters foresee hard frost in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) at New Year's night. The reason is the cyclone coming southward from the Arctic Ocean.
“Within the next few days central republic regions including Yakutsk will occur under the full influence of the cyclone. The temperature around Yakutsk is going to be under -40ºC,” says Yuri Dikhtyarenko, chief of the city hydrometeorological office.
“In the eastern regions located on the opposite bank of the Lena river, there will be -48ºC -53ºC. The western regions as Khangalassky and Gorny will have -44ºC -49ºC. The lowest temperature will be, certainly, registered in Oymyakon and Verkhoyansk. Two official Poles of Cold will go through -54ºC -59ºC. It will be much warmer in southern regions such as Nerungri, Lensk and Vilujsk.”
“Such temperatures we are waiting for at the end of 2006 and at the beginning of 2007.”
“New Year's Holidays will be foggy. The amplitude between day and night temperatures is going to be 2-3 degrees centigrade. Preliminary forecast that said of warm weather on holidays didn't prove to be correct.”
However, the temperature expected in Yakutsk won't be below the norm that has been fixing with long-term observation. The survey says that Yakutsk minimum temperature is -46ºC. So it won't be colder.”
