Annual extreme epiphany bathing
On January 19, the Orthodox Church celebrated the Christening of the Lord and our Savor Jesus Christ. On January 18, in Epiphany Eve, Bishop Yakut and Lensk Zocima lead a grade of Great consecration of water on the river Lena.
On this holiday the Orthodox Church recollects Jesus Christ's Christening from John Predtechi on the river Jordan . Also this holiday is named as the Epiphany because at the Christening of the Lord there was appeared the Sacred Trinity : the God Father spoke from the sky about the Son, the Divine Son was christened and has been certified by the Father, the Spirit Sacred has left on Jesus as the pigeon. About Christening of the Lord is narrated at three evangelists: Matthew (3, 13-17), Mark (1,9-11), Luke (3,21,22) .
By ancient church tradition, in memory of these evangelical events in orthodox temples before a holiday of the Epiphany the grade of Great consecration of water is made (within one year water is consecrated by a small grade). As a rule, water consecrated in Christening Eve, quickly is took by believers who within one year with a pray resort to its fertile help, therefore the grade of Great consecration repeats and in day of a holiday, after the Divine Liturgy.
The last year, due to help the Republic Ministry of Emergency Situations, in our republic the tradition of Epiphany bathing in the river Lena has revived. Under the legend, bathing people with belief, get rid of corporal and sincere illnesses.
This year believers also can plunge into the consecrated water – in Yakutsk the grade of Great consecration will take place today on January, 18, 2007 at 13:30 on an ice-hole near the Moscow quay , then within two days access to a font will be open for all interested person.
As well as the last year, the given action is supported by the Republic Ministry of Emergency Situations: from 14.01.07. employees of the State inspection on undersized court of justice and rescuers conduct works on preparation of a place for Christening fonts.
Then above an ice-hole heated tents will be established, man's and female locker rooms are equipped , for transport parking prepares. Safety also will be provided by forces of employees and rescuers.
By EMERCOM's forces water consecration in an ice-hole was organized in the village of Kyzyl-Syr (Pokrovsky arrival), Olekminsk (Spasky arrival), Pokrovsk (Pokrovsky arrival), Lensk (arrival of Prelate Innokenty) and in Chersk.
