A bicycle journey to Baikal Lake
On July 25, 2006 a group of 9 cyclists started their long journey from the central square of Yakutsk to Baikal Lake. Trip will take approximately tree weeks. Total distance is about 800 km.
The first part of travel, from Yakutsk to Nerungri, cyclists will overcome by bus, further they plan to get to Ulan-Ude by train, than only tourists are going to cycle to Olkhon Island and Baikal. Adventurers intend to come back along the Lena river by a passenger ship.
Such an idea of healthy lifestyle promotion appeared in past winter. ‘MTS', a big Russian cellular communication company, came out to be as the general sponsor.
The team consists of 7 males and 2 females. They have good calisthenics and two-year travel experience. The middle age is 30 years old.
The journey outside of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is the first experience of Yakutsk Cycle Racing Federation. Annually, the organization arranges various trips but within the region. Its members cycled to the city of Pokrovsk , the settlements of Amga and Oymyakon, and other destinations. Students and teenagers tend to participate in such a cycle journey across the republic.
‘The long distance expedition may become regular' said Eugene Nikiforov, the federation's spokesman. Next year cycle tourists determined to go abroad. Maybe, to China .
