Yakutsk State University named after M.K. Ammosov is the largest high colleage in the republic, the biggest scientific center of the North of Russia.
For preparing experts and developing scientific researches in April, 1984 Yakutsk State University deserved Peoples Friendship Award.
Since December, 1990 the university carries a name of outstanding political and public figure Maxim K. Ammosov .
By the Decree of the President of Yakutia Michael E. Nikolaev from Feb. 6, 1993 YSU recieved the status of the head high school of the republic, responsible for raising experts in humanitarian, social, economic, pedagogical, and natural-scientific fields.
Yakutsk State University is formed on the basis of the Yakutsk Pedagogical Institute by the Decision of Council of Ministers of the USSR on Aug. 23, 1956.
The university incorporated 20 departments of four faculties with 105 teachers, including 2 doctors and 36 candidates of sciences. For last eight years the quantity of students has increased from 7164 up to 16116. In 1992 there were 24 doctors, 302 candidates of sciences; in 2000 -- 85 doctors and 436 candidates.
Today the university can offer bachelors more than 50 majors. In 1992 there were 44 aspirants (graduate students), now it has 250.
The university prepared more than 34 thousand experts for business and public administration, education and public health services, etc.
