The Sakha Republic (Yakutia) is the largest federal subject of Russia. The total area of Yakutia comes to 3,103,200 km², and it covers almost the entire northeastern part of the Asian continent, stretching 2000 kilometers from the north to the south, and 2500 kilometers from the east to the west.

Almost 80% of the territory lies to the north of 600 of the northern latitude, and over 40 per cent sprawls across the polar circle. The capital of the republic, Yakutsk, is located 8,468 kilometers away from Moscow (6 hours by plane), and 1814 kilometers from Vladivostok...

Yakutia borders with seven subjects of the Russian Federation: in the west - Krasnoyarsk Krai, in south-west and south — Irkutsk and Amur Oblasts, Zabaikalsky Krai, in south-east — Khabarovsk Krai, in the east - Magadan Oblast and Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.

The medium of the Yakutia territory is the 61º 11' northern latitude, 130º 40' eastern longitude. According to the administrative division, this position is on the Verkhoyansk region territory in 150 kilometers from the lake Sebyan-Kyuel , on the top of the 1048m high mountain, in 77 km on the south-west from the village Suordakh, in 250 km from Batagay. The Yakut geodesists set the memorable sign on the mountain.

By the quantity of health water reservoirs, Yakutia is the leader in the north-east Russia . Only in the central part of the republic there are more than 100 lakes, streams, springs and frozen-free sources with health water. In some sources water temperature achieves 50ºC.

In the Kular region the hydrologists searching water for using in industrial development discovered the Narzan source.

There are 372 modern glaciers on the Chersky range with the total area about 160 sq.km. The biggest glacier in the world, the Ulakhan Taryn is 160sq.km in area and 5-6m in depth. In chilling winter Taryny are always covered with water but in summer with ice.

In 1684 waywode Matvey Korovkov ordered Cossack Yakunka Fyodorov to dig the well in 8 sagenes (30.5m). Later the waywode wrote the letter to Moscow and revealed his first suggestion about the existence of permafrost in Yakutsk: “The wells in the Yakut region are impossible to dig. The ground does not melt even in summer. Earth is always frozen”.

M.V. Lomonosov was the first who gave the scientific explanation of the deep frozen lithosphere (1757) .
