In 2004 the average population amount of the republic was 949.5 thousand people. Average density of population is 0.3 man /sq km.

The number of economically active people is 507.8 thousand people or 53.5 per cent. In 2004 the level of official unemployment was 1.9 per cent, the level of actual unemployment reached 8.2 per cent. Specific weight of urban population is 64.5 per cent, rural population – 35.5 per cent.

Population of the republican largest cities (thousand people, on the 1st October, 2004): Yakutsk – 216.8; Neryungri – 65.8; Mirny – 39.5.

Russians (50.3%), the Yakuts (Sakha people) (33.4%), and Ukrainians (7%) are the three most common nationalities inhabiting Sakha.

As of Jan. 1, 2008, Yakutia had 951,436. At that time, 619,568 gave preference to towns, and 331,868 to life in country.
